A Minus Culture
Exhibition — 2018
Work for the People (or Forget about Fred Hampton)
Co-prosperity, Chicago, IL
A Minus Culture amplifies a sonic collage mixing audio element from J. Gary Mitchell’s documentary, Chicano(1971), with musical improvisations by SIRG members recorded while in residence atThe Poor Farm in Wisconsin and at Rough Harmony in Chicago. The audio collage is broadcast through a sculptural assemblage featuring a vintage amp decorated with various political buttons, bricks from a decommissioned monument, microphones, mic stands, and a book about early Hollywood films.
Work for the People featured local and national artist/revolutionaries mining the radical histories and implications of the events of 1968 for today’s struggles and those in the (sometimes deep) future.
